Our Mission

Somos Seattle is an organization for the 2SLGBTQ+ Latinx community. Our mission is to build an active community, share resources and foster spaces for learning and growth.

Acknowledgement of Privilege

As an organization dedicated to serving our vibrant and diverse community, we recognize that our ability to achieve our mission is dependent upon our honesty regarding the power, access and privilege we currently hold.

We recognize that our team, structure and history grant us certain unearned advantages—privileges that stand in contrast to the lived experiences of many members of the Latinx 2SLGBTQ+ community we seek to support. Specifically, we acknowledge the following privileges:

• Gender Identity Privilege: Our Board is currently composed entirely of individuals who identify as cisgender. We recognize that this lack of representation can lead to blind spots, and we commit to actively listening to and prioritizing the experiences and leadership of trans, non-binary and gender-nonconforming individuals within our community.

• Racial and Indigenous Privilege: The majority of our team members are white-passing and possess lesser direct ties to the Indigenous community. We understand that this position can unintentionally perpetuate forms of erasure and exclusion, particularly for Black, Brown and Indigenous members of the Latinx 2SLGBTQ+ community. We recognize that solidarity requires more than intention; it requires active disruption of the racial and colonial legacies that grant us this advantage.

We understand that privilege is not simply an advantage but a potential barrier. When our team lacks true diversity in lived experience, our spaces and resources—no matter how well-intentioned—may fail to be fully accessible, relevant or safe for the entirety of our community.

We explicitly acknowledge that we do not currently represent the entirety of the Latinx 2SLGBTQ+ community. We know that intersectionality matters, and our current demographic composition means we may not fully grasp the challenges faced by those who navigate the world at the intersection of racial, gender and sexual identities.

However, we commit to moving beyond acknowledgement and into active practice. Our commitment to the community we serve requires us to intentionally restructure our organization to better reflect the diversity, depth and leadership within the Latinx 2SLGBTQ+ community.

• We are actively seeking to incorporate Black, Indigenous and Trans individuals into our decision-making processes by recruiting new board members who authentically represent and work with the Black, Indigenous and Trans communities.

• We are dedicating resources for contracted staff and board members to educate themselves on anti-racism, decolonization and gender-affirming practices led by educators from the communities we aim to serve.

We pledge to use our current organizational privileges—including access to resources and networks—not to maintain power, but to transfer power and create a truly inclusive and equitable space for all.
