Board of Directors Position Description

Organizational Description:

Somos Seattle is born out of the need to build space for LGBTQ Latinx chosen family, culture, and resilience. Somos is an organization serving LGBTQ Latinx folks. Our goal is to build an active community, share resources, and foster spaces for learning & growth.

Position Summary:

Somos is governed by 7-9 members of our Board of Directors, which are tasked to organize and support events, oversee annual budgets and expenses, establish organizational strategy & goals, oversee programs and metrics of success, as well as design scopes of work for volunteers, contractors, and staff. 

Length of Term & Commitment: 

  • 1 year with the option to renew for a second term automatically. 

  • Attend two-hour monthly Board meetings. 

Responsibilities of The Board of Directors:

  1. Meeting the fundraising goals for the organization.

  2. Selecting and evaluating the performance of the staff, contractors, and volunteers.

  3. Develop the strategic and organizational plan.

  4. Ensure fiduciary solid oversight and financial management in partnership with the fiscal sponsor Rainier Valley Corps.

  5. Approving, organizing, and monitoring the organization’s programs and services.

  6. Enhancing the organization's public image and fostering partnerships. 

  7. Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization.

Responsibilities of Individual Board Members:

Each individual board member is expected to:

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs.

  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements.

  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary to advance its mission.

  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission.

  • Give a meaningful personal financial donation.

  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings, retreats and support with organization events.

  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization.

Qualifications include:

  • Must have strong interpersonal communication habits.

  • Skilled in google-docs for collaborative assignments.

  • Have access to a computer or phone to join virtual meetings.

  • LGBTQ & Latinx experiences and cultural knowledge.
